Omar Trabelsi

EDUCATION AND MEDICAL TRAINING
Dr. Omar Trabelsi  started his medical studies at the  Faculty of Medicine of Tunis. He specialized in ophthalmology through training in Belgium, followed by further studies at Pretoria University, South Africa, where he earned his degree in Ophthalmology.

PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTIONS
Dr. Trabelsi is a distinguished Vitreo-retinal Surgeon and pioneered a 2 steps vitreoretinal surgery technique. His resuls has been published on Mars 2023.
He is actively involved in training young ophthalmologists from different African countries , particularly in surgical retina. They are hosted at the “Clinique ophtalmologique de Tunis”

AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL
He is member of the Tunisian Ophthalmological Society and the Tunisian Vitreo-retinal Society (TVRS)
AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL
▪At the ICO he served as Coordinator for Retina (Africa & Middle East) at the World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) – Mexico (2016) & Barcelona (2018)
and Abstract Reviewer for Vitreoretinal Surgery at WOC Cape Town (2020) & WOC 2022
▪At the AAO he served as and translator of the AAO benchmarks from English to French

VOLUNTEER WORK AND GLOBAL OUTREACH

A dedicated volunteer, Dr. Trabelsi is an active member of Nadi Al Bassar, a Tunisian NGO focused on blindness prevention. He contributes extensively to capacity-building programs in West and East Africa, training ophthalmologists and technicians in sutureless small-incision cataract surgery (SLICS). He has led numerous cataract surgery campaigns in these regions.

His international involvement includes participation in Human Resources Development programs across 11 Francophone African countries and translating the American Academy Journal into French.
CURRENT POSITION:
-General Director of Clinique Ophtalmologique de Tunis, a leading ophthalmology center in North Africa and the Mediterranean region
-Board Member of the Middle East Africa Vitreoretinal Society (MEAVRS) (since 2022)
HOBBIES
His main hobby is  horse riding . He is an emeritus horseman which led him to found the  Hippoclub, Tunisia’s most prestigious horse-riding academy, where he trains children with disabilities and visual impairments.
