Amel Meddeb-Ouertani

I am Professor of Ophthalmology, I got my diploma as medical doctor at the faculty of medicine of Tunis and my diploma as specialist in ophthalmology at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris.
My clinical interests include cornea and glaucoma. I am former head of the Ophthalmic Department at Charles Nicolle University Hospital in Tunis, I pioneered the establishment of the ICO residency curricula in Tunisia. I was training 25 Tunisian residents and around 10 other African colleagues a year, I was and am still organizing teaching workshops outside Tunisia.

I am Former Director of the basic research unit on “Behçet disease and on Diabetic retinopathy”.
I established twinning programs with Pretoria and Alexandria universities and with Nagasaki University .

I am former President of the Tunisian Ophthalmological Society, Former Founding President of the Tunisian Society of Aerospace medicine and former Tunisian national coordinator for prevention of blindness .
I am former member of the Global Outreach committee of the AAO.
Being also former member of the Advisory Board of ICO, I was strongly involved in joint programs such as the “Leadership Development program for Sub-Saharan Africa” and the “Residency Program Director’s course”. I am also working to have the ICO give more interest to the African Francophone countries
I am former and Founding President of the Middle East Africa Women in Ophthalmology Society .
I am currently serving as the Vice-President of the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) President of the Middle East Africa Glaucoma Society (MEAG’S) and Scientific Director of “Nadi Al Bassar”, a leading NGO in the region, I participated in many eye camps and developed a clear understanding of Eye health status in Africa
