Maria Iglesias Alvarez

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain (USC, 2010). Specialized in ophthalmology at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center in Barcelona, Spain (2011-2016). Fellowship of the European Board of Ophthalmology degree (FEBO, 2015). Member of the anterior department medical-surgical team of the Orense University Hospital Complex (2016-2020), and the Dr. Iglesias Ophthalmological Clinic, Orense, Spain. Cum laude PhD from the University of Barcelona, Spain (UB, 2016-2022) in biomechanical corneal properties and tonometry, she has developed and patented a new tonometer to measure intraocular pressure in myopic patients who underwent laser refractive surgery, for which she received a Research Grant in Spain from the Catalan Society of Ophthalmology (SCOFT, 2016), the award from the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB, 2020) and the award from the Spanish society of Implant and Refractive Eye Surgery (SECOIR, 2023). In 2024, her innovative device won first prize among innovators from around the world competing at in the iNovation Den of the ESCRS (European Society of Corneal and Refractive Surgery) in Barcelona, Spain; and second place at the Eyecelerator ASCRS Annual Meeting (American Society of Corneal and Refractive Surgery) in Boston, USA. She currently combines her practice among the San Rafael Hospital (Barcelona 2020- today) with a clinical research fellowship, undergoing a multicenter study phase to extrapolate the tonometer results. Besides, she is a member of the anterior segment master teaching faculty, in Barraquer Ophthalmology Institute.
