Prof Dr Cosimo Mazzotta MD, PhD, FWCRS
Graduated from Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at University of Siena, Italy,
Medical School in 1997.
He had his Specialist Diploma in Ophthalmology in 2001 at University of Siena, Italy
and received his PhD in Ocular Pathology and Oncology at University of Siena in
2006.
He was nominated Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Sassari,
Italy in 2023.
Since 2015 he is Adjunct Professor at Post Graduated Ophthalmology Speciality
School, University of Siena, Italy.
Anterior Segment Eye Surgeon at the Ophthalmology Departmental Unit of the Alta
Val d’ Elsa Hospital (Poggibonsi, Siena) for the National Health System of Italy (USL
Toscana Sud Est) and Siena Crosslinking Centre, Italy.
He is Fellow of the World Council of Refractive Surgeons and Visual Sciences
(FWCRS).
Co-Founder of the International Keratoconus Society (IKS).
Adjunct Professor ESASO European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology,
Italian University of Switzerland, Lugano.
Head and Founder of the Siena International Crosslinking Center, Italy.
He introduced in Italy the “Crosslinking therapy” being Awarded by the Italian
Ophthalmology Society in 2004 for the best RESEARCH PROJECT IN
OPTHALMOLOGY FOR KERATOCONUS CONSERVATIVE THERAPY.
He invented the VEGA C.B.M. UV-A X-linker (the first CE marked UV-A emitter) for
the crosslinking therapy.
He was Awarded in 2021 with Gold Medal by the Italian Ophthalmology Society for
the Best Research Project for Keratoconus titled “Ray-Tracing-Guided Central
Corneal Remodelling plus Pachymetry-Guided ACXL M nomogram for visual
rehabilitation in Keratoconus” published in Cornea Journal in 2023.
Crosslinking Pioneer, he performed the First World in vivo Confocal Microscopy
studies in the field crosslinking in Humans, publishing milestones in the most
important Peer-Reviewed Top Ranking Journals of Ophthalmology.
